Wild Cave Tours operates all year round, usually 2-3 trips per week in the summer season. Bookings are essential. Can’t see the date you prefer? Please see the special page on this website also our Facebook photography for an idea of the mental and physical challenges involved. Some types of disability may not be a problem. If applicable, carers may accompany at discounted rates (four or more people booking). Mobility considerations: no defined paths exist to the caves or within the caves. Mobility compromised people may accompany others to the starting point of the activities, but may prefer to take part in other nearby attractions instead. Potential clients and carers are encouraged to read information on the activities offered then discuss concerns and requirements with the operator. Ages and group size:

If you’re 14 years* or over, tired of the crowds and concrete paths and want to discover scenery more than skin deep, then this is the sensible way to see Tasmania’s natural or “wild” caves. The maximum ratio is 6 to a guide, minimum two, maximum 12 in a tour. (*see Trip Notes & FAQs: ask the operator if you think your child under 14 should be considered for a “Mild” or “Wild” trip OR just book a Family-Friendly Tour ( a discounted mild tour for four or more).

The Activity

Each trip is different, because the style is tailored for you. Our small group size means you can choose easy or full-on activities, but this does not normally involve technical vertical roping. However, special offers or Private Charters may include a spectacular 24 m abseil into a cave. The caves are undeveloped (natural/wild) caves of the Mole Creek Karst National Park and Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA).

Partners who are not caving can enjoy quiet birdwatching and nature photography away from the crowds while we are in the caves. We have authorised (licensed) access to a secluded part of the TWWHA not normally available to the general public.

Caving options include photography, music/voice, glow-worms, a peaceful underground wilderness experience, environmental interpretation, fossils, fauna, speleo-skills, river caves and adventure/challenges (compliant with the Australian Speleological Federation’s Minimal Impact Caving Code). Challenge-By-Choice and Leave-No-Trace principles apply. Wilderness Therapy programs and incentives are supported.

Mild caving, half day $AU165 per person

A morning trip finishing with lunch. Duration is normally from 8.30 to approximately 12.30 pm. Winter start is 9.00 (June, July, August). Tour minimum two people. You can book a half day trip as a Photography Trip or Photography Workshop to learn cave specific techniques.

You can also book a half day Family Friendly Tour, discounted for a family group of four or more. See the booking button.

Once you’ve gained some experience and skills, if returning for a second half day, the tour may involve a more remote and/or difficult cave. Or just book a full day “Wild caving” trip to see two caves in the one day. You’re welcome to phone or email for further information.

Wild caving, full day $AU330 per person – extend yourself, it’s really worth doing two different caves

Break with lunch in between caves and ends with afternoon tea. Above average fitness is required. Duration is normally from 8.30 to approximately 4.30. Winter start 9.00.

Tour inclusions : Lunch, overalls, gumboots and all caving equipment plus afternoon tea (or tapas and ale on a full day Special Public Event, when available).

Extras and Variations

A 10% discount may apply when booking 4 or more people (Note: not available for Family-Friendly tours, which are already 20% discounted). Get your Tasmanian National Parks pass (this link goes off-site) if you haven’t already. Starting and finishing times may be varied by arrangement, if available. Check with Deb.

Abseiling may be arranged for group trips specially on request for extra cost (P.O.A.). For group bookings for caving and abseiling, we work with a professional, accredited abseiling specialist, extending the experience with the vertical option (extra cost). Included is a special interest group briefing before caving and abseiling. Your group is organised into two groups that swap about at lunchtime between activities. Everyone gets the opportunity to abseil into the cave as well as an extended interpretive cave tour.

For special interest groups (Private Charter), we can take up to 22 in two sub-groups on a caving and abseiling day! Everyone gets to do both activities. More below…. see Extras.

Your specialist hosts work under Tasmanian license and accreditation requirements. Established in 1989, we provide professional cave experiences delivered by experienced caving club people. Bushwalking, fishing, quiet camping and a full range of accommodation options are available locally. We also do BUSHWALKER or AIRPORT TRANSFERS for 2-6 people (extra cost).
